Enhancing National Community Health Systems

Development and implementation of Tanzania health information mediator interoperability use cases and the strengthening of the community digital health tool

Project Detail

The project focused on the Development of Comprehensive Community Health Systems, building upon the robust OpenSRP Platform. The aim was to transform this platform into the National Community Health Systems while also integrating a Health Information Mediator through the Open-source platform OpenHIM. This ambitious initiative was funded by USAID, channeled through Digital Square, which played a vital role in managing all technical operations.

Throughout the project, a collaborative approach was emphasized, engaging closely with the government and various stakeholders to identify and prioritize specific use cases. This ensured that the design and implementation activities were directly aligned with the needs of the community and healthcare providers. The team took the lead in design activities, focusing on creating user-friendly interfaces and efficient workflows to enhance overall user experience and operational effectiveness.

Moreover, rigorous management of the software development life cycle was a crucial component. This included meticulous attention to detail in each phase—from gathering initial requirements and conceptual designing to thorough testing and a smooth implementation process. Compliance with established standards and best practices was consistently enforced, guaranteeing high-quality outputs.

The results of this concerted effort were significant: the creation of a fully developed and unified Android-based community health system tailored for both KITUIONI and WAJA. In addition, a sophisticated reporting web dashboard was implemented, enabling analytics visualization of the data collected through the application. This dashboard serves as a powerful tool for healthcare providers, allowing them to make data-informed decisions and track health metrics effectively. Overall, the project not only improved health system functionalities but also fostered an environment of collaboration and innovation in community health management.
